Vineyard wedding. These two words are romance. Upon hearing or reading them instantly
our imagination flits to and fro with visions of fine wine, lush landscapes, candlelight and romance. It evokes a timeless elegance, formal yet familiar — relaxed while still sophisticated. Thomas Jefferson once had a dream for winemaking in Central Virginia and it is such a privilege to see this dream a reality today. With more than 20 wineries on the Monticello Wine Trail alone, each pouring a delicious glass in a sumptuous setting, it’s no wonder that wineries are today’s number one destination for weddings in Central Virginia.
While the leaves may be off the vines in the winter months, vineyards can still be warm and welcoming sites for weddings. Some local vineyards have large ballrooms that make weather concerns a non-issue for wedding parties. Their sweeping mountain views still delight and create an idyllic backdrop for your nuptials. Some even have outdoor fireplaces, which make a festive gathering spot for guests who want to brave the elements out of doors and perhaps roast a marshmallow or two! Here are some tips to help you begin the process of finding the one vineyard that is right for your wedding.
Check out a list of area wineries here. From here you will be able to read about the vineyards, learn if they offer space for weddings and then follow links to vineyards that do.
Have a “virtual vineyard tour.” Visit their websites and create a list of the vineyards that most capture your vision. Each venue has a style of its own. Some are more formal than others. With the wide variety there is sure to be one that is just right for you!
Contact the venues to determine their costs and dates available. I encourage you to do this before visiting in case a vineyard is beyond your budget or not available at your preferred times. I’d hate for you to fall in love with a space that you cannot afford or doesn’t fit your calendar.
Armed with your short list, set out to visit the sites in person, taste the wine and see if you can imagine your celebration here. (It’s hard work but somebody’s got to do it, right?)
