Ahhh.... the first dance. For some this is their chance to perform choreography worthy of the next season of Dancing with the Stars, for others it is a task to be dreaded and feared. But for all it is deemed de rigueur in the wedding world so we see couples constantly looking for ways to personalize their first dance.
Where to begin? First, you can look at what's popular in the wedding song arena.
Here's the Top 5 list for 2012:
Did you catch that Charlottesville's Own Dave Matthews is on the list?!
Once you select your first dance song - consider choosing a different performer or arrangement to make it stand out. Also, consider incorporating it into your wedding ceremony. For example, have your ceremony musicians play an instrumental version of it when the bride enters or when you both exit the ceremony. Guests may not recognize it immediately but it will click later during the reception when they see and hear you dancing to a more familiar version of the song.
The most important advice I can tell you though is to BE YOURSELF. If you are a fun loving and silly couple and "The Candy Man" is your song then embrace it and have fun with it.
I strongly encourage couples to seek out the help of a dance teacher if they are feeling nervous. This professional can help you create a dance that will be memorable and comfortable for your skill level. And the most important advice of all? Practice, Practice, Practice!
and you will have a personal, memorable first dance even if you have two left feet!
